How to use dual SIM on a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip phones only have one SIM slot.

· 3 min read

Dual-SIM slots have been a fixed feature in the Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy A, and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series phones for the past few years. However, if you are considering a switch to the latest Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 (or an older version of the Galaxy Z Flip series), you might want to note that phones in the Galaxy Z Flip series do not contain a dual-SIM slot. But, this doesn't mean that you can't use dual SIMs on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5; because you can, just not in the same way that you use it on older Samsung devices.

Understanding the Dual SIM Feature

Before delving into the intricacies of using Dual SIM on your Samsung Galaxy Z Flip phones, let's first understand what Dual SIM actually means. Essentially, it allows you to use two SIM cards simultaneously in a single device. This means you can have two separate phone numbers and data plans, enabling you to efficiently manage your personal and professional contacts without the need to carry two separate phones.

Each SIM card can be associated with a different mobile network operator, providing you with the flexibility to choose the best network for voice calls, text messages, and data usage.

Setting Up Dual SIM on Your Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Series

Traditionally, Dual SIM on Samsung devices have been supported by having 2 SIM card slots to accommodate 2 physical SIMs. On the newer Samsung devices that are eSIM-compatible, they have also opened up the option to use an eSIM as your second SIM. In these phones, dual SIM can be used either by using 2 physical SIM cards, or 1 physical SIM and 1 eSIM.

With the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, the SIM tray comes only with 1 SIM card slot That means that if you want to use the Dual SIM functionality on the Flip 5 phone, your only option would be to use 1 physical SIM and 1 eSIM.

Installing your physical SIM is very straightforward - simply put the SIM card into the SIM tray. Installing the eSIM isn't that much more difficult, and can be completed within a few taps on your device:

Install Pre-assigned plan

If your device has a pre-assigned plan:

a. On your device, go to Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager

b. Select Add Mobile Plan and wait for it to search for available plans

c. Select the plan and follow the instructions on screen

QR Code Installation

Most eSIM providers will provide an installation QR code upon successful purchase. If you are purchasing an eSIM primarily for travel (as opposed to a local daily use), this would commonly be the method that you will use for installation.

a. Print out the QR code or display it on another screen

b. On your device, go to Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager

c. Select Add Mobile Plan

d. Select Scan carrier QR code

e. Scan your QR code

Manual Input

It is typically not recommended to install an eSIM by manual input. But if for whatever reason you prefer doing that (or if the QR code method doesn't work), here is how to do so:

a. Print out the QR code or display it on another screen

b. On your device, go to Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager

c. Select Add Mobile Plan

d. Select Scan carrier QR code then select Enter Activation Code

e. Enter the information provided to you by your service provider.

Activating Dual SIM in Galaxy Z Flip Series

Now that you have the SIM card and eSIM profile set up in your phone, you can go ahead to activate your dual SIM. Activation of dual SIM in your Galaxy Z Flip Series is similar to activating it in any other Samsung Galaxy phones. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager, and select the SIM (or eSIM profile) that you want to activate. Turn it on, and you can configure what you want to use the different profiles for - whether it is for calls, SMS, or data.
